2020 Cadillac XT6 Review, Specs, Price, Release Date – Presented at the beginning of 2019, the Cadillac XT6 is the company’s first three-row SUV, in addition to the massive Escalade. It covers the gap between the latter and the compact XT5 and completes the lineup of four Cadillac SUVs for the 2020 model year. Built on the same platform as the Chevrolet Traverse, it is more like a version. Reconditioned and more sophisticated GMC Acadia Denali.
The 2020 XT6 arrives to compete in a segment full of SUVs that already includes big sellers like the BMW X5, the Audi Q7 and the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class. The Caddy also goes against the new Lincoln Aviator, the popular Acura MDX and the leader in the Lexus RX segment. How does it compare with some of its main rivals? Let’s see in the review below.
2020 Cadillac XT6 Review
2020 Cadillac XT6 Review : Exterior
The Cadillac XT6 introduces a new design language. Although the daytime running lights are still present in the front bumper vents, they are no longer connected to the headlights, as seen in the CT6 sedan and other SUVs with the XT badge. The headlights are also thinner and seem inspired by the Escala concept. Of course, the SUV is equipped with the well-known trapezoidal grille, which makes the bumper more sporty thanks to its large central exit and its large side openings.
The profile of the XT6 is the bridge between the XT5 and the Escalade. Even if it is not as muscular and sporty as the XT5, it is not as boxing as the Escalade. The high waist and sturdy wings make it exciting, while the simple door panels and greenhouse add a touch of elegance. It is quite obvious that the XT6 is for German SUVs like the BMW X5 and the Audi Q7.
On the back, the XT6 fits well in the current Cadillac range. It has the vertical taillights, the chrome rim that covers the entire width of the tailgate and the large trapezoidal hole in the license plate. Cadillac has also added a diffuser type element under the bumper, which also incorporates large exhaust pipes.
So, how big is the XT6 compared to the Escalade? In fact, it is only slightly smaller than the SUV with a normal wheelbase of 198.8 inches, a decrease of 3.7%. It is also narrower by three inches, while its wheelbase is shorter by 3.3 inches.
Compared with its German rivals, the XT6 is five inches longer than the BMW X5 but tied with the Audi Q7. It looks like both SUVs in width and height, but its wheelbase is shorter than four inches.
2020 Cadillac XT6 Review : Trim Levels
The XT6 is available in two versions, Premium Luxury and Sport, each with distinctive features. The Premium Luxury model comes with a Bright Galvan finish on the grille, window frames and roof rails, red lenses on the taillights and exhaust outlets. The sport, on the other hand, presents a black grid with a mesh inspired by V, which combines window moldings and roof rails. The lenses of the taillights are clear in this model. Both come standard with 20-inch wheels, but the XT6 Sport can also be ordered with 21-inch rollers.
2020 Cadillac XT6 Review : Interior
The XT6 is pretty basic in the cabin. I’m not saying that the luxury of a Cadillac does not surprise you, it’s just that the company has opted for a simple and clean design. However, the dashboard has a somewhat complex design, the central edge becomes wider towards the central stack to integrate the infotainment screen. In the same way, the lower board is the color of the lower central stack, so it looks like a large element on which the upper board floats.
The digital infotainment is integrated in the center console, as in other Cadillacs. However, its eight-inch diagonal is quite small for the high-end market. Where most manufacturers offer screens of at least 10 inches. The good news is that it incorporates the same technology as the XT4. So you have the same jogging function that allows you to tilt the button for easier navigation. It also provides access to an advanced navigation system, SiriusXM, a 4G LTE Wi-Fi access point (with 3GB or three months of data), Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as wireless charging.
As for the materials, the XT6 is definitely of the high-end variety. Most surfaces are covered with leather, including the top of the board, the steering wheel, the center console and the door panels. We can also see a shiny insert on the dashboard and a metallic trim on the steering wheel and door panels. Premium Luxury presents an exotic wood finish, while Sport replaces it with carbon fiber. Premium semi-aniline skin is available in both models.
The list of options also includes heated and ventilated front seats and heated second row seats, an air ionizer and a Bose Performance Series audio system with 14 custom speakers. The thermal steering wheel is delivered as standard. Cadillac also includes adaptive cruise control, night vision, NFC phone pairing, an HD surround view camera, a hands-free liftgate and adaptive remote start with keyless opening.
2020 Cadillac XT6 Review : Features
The XT6 also features a standard third-row electric folding seat and a remote folding feature for the second row seat. A tilt function in the second row seat facilitates access to the third row.
A little smaller than the Escalade, the XT6 has a lower passenger volume. Headroom is 42.8 to 39.8 inches in the front room, 38.7 to 39.1 inches in the second row and 38.1 to 37.2 inches in the third row. The XT6 also offers less legroom in the front row, from 45.3 to 41.2 inches. However, the leg room of the second row is similar to 39 inches, while the third leg room space is larger on the XT6 at 29.5 inches compared to 24.8 inches.
But how does the XT6 compare with its leading competitors? The available height in the first row is slightly lower than that of the X5, which offers an additional inch at 40.8 inches. The XT6, however, offers a bit more space for the legs, almost 1.5 inches in the front row and almost two in the second row. The X5 does not have a seat option in the third row and we can not compare SUVs in this department. As for the shoulder clearance, the X5 is a little wider. You will get almost two additional inches in the first row and 0.7 inches in the second row.
Compared to the Audi Q7, the XT6 offers a margin similar to that of the front, but adds an additional 3.2 inches in the second row. Similarly, the legroom in the first row is similar, with a half inch more in the Q7, but the Caddy wins second by a whopping 10 inches.
Returning to the cargo volume, the XT6 offers only 12.6 cubic feet behind the third row, but this figure drops to 43.1 cubic feet behind the second row. Fold the seats of the second row flat and the load capacity will increase to 78.7 cubic feet. As you can imagine, it is not as spacious as the Escalade. The largest SUV offers 2.6 additional cubic feet behind the third row, 8.5 additional cubic feet behind the second row and an additional 15.5 cubic feet behind the first row.
Although of similar size, the X5 is lower in this department because it takes only 33.9 cubic feet behind the second row. When these seats are folded, the capacity increases to 72.3 cubic feet, a decrease of 6.4 cubic feet. The Audi Q3 also offers less space. With three rows in place, you can swallow 10.4 cubic feet, more than two cubic feet less than the XT6. Folding the seats in the third row increases the capacity to 27.2 cubic feet, but it is almost 16 cubic feet less than the Cadillac. With the second flat folded row, the Q7 can carry up to 69 cubic feet of luggage. Again, this significant decrease of 9.7 cubic feet compared to the XT6.
2020 Cadillac XT6 Review : Engine Specs
Unlike the Escalade, which is equipped with a 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V-8, the XT6 is equipped with a 3.6-liter V-6 under the bonnet. This engine is the same LGX as the smaller XT5 and offers the same 310 horsepower and 271 lb-ft of spin. The plant is also shared with ATS, CTS and CTS, as well as with Chevrolet Camaro and Blazer.
The engine adapts to the nine-speed automatic transmission that is already common in General Motors vehicles. It incorporates the new electronic precision function of the company and active fuel management technology. This last option allows the engine to use only four cylinders when the power of the V-6 is not necessary to improve fuel economy.
All-wheel drive is standard on the Sport version and optional on the Premium Luxury model. Both vehicles have different configurations. While Premium Luxury focuses on refinement and quieter driving, the Sport is designed to offer greater agility. The latter comes with an active dual-clutch AWD control design with active spin control, active continuous damping control and a faster steering ratio.
The XT6 is based on a MacPherson strut suspension with front stabilizer bar and an independent five-link suspension with coil springs in the rear. It has four-corner ABS disc brakes, consisting of Duralife brake discs and low drag gauges.
Performance is not yet known, but according to Cadillac, the XT6 can tow up to 4,000 pounds. This is far from impressive compared to the BMW X5, which reaches up to 6,600 pounds. The Audi Q7 is doing even better in this department with a towing capacity of up to 7,700 pounds. That’s double the XT6!
2020 Cadillac XT6 Review : Safety
Like any premium vehicle, the XT6 is equipped with safety technologies and driver assistance. The list of standard equipment is quite long and includes an HD rear view camera, a frontal collision alert, a tracking distance indicator, automatic emergency braking and pedestrian braking in the front. The XT6 also includes front and rear parking assistance, lane change warning with side blind zone warning, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning with lane change alert, seat for Safety Alert and speed limiter .
Although already on par with most of its competitors, the XT6 can be upgraded with optional features, such as the rearview mirror, adaptive cruise control; Automatic parking assistance with brakes, pedestrian warning on the rear, high-definition surround sound recorder and visor, automatic reverse braking, night vision and hook guide with hitch viewer.
2020 Cadillac XT6 Review : Price and Release Date
Rate information for the XT6 is not yet available. But as it is between the XT5 and the Escalade, it should cost more the first but less than the previous one. On the other hand, I do not want to split the difference between the XT5 and the Escalade, because the XT6 will probably cost closer to the Escalade than to the XT5. With the compact price of $ 41,695 and the full-size SUV starting at $ 75,195, the XT6 will likely start at $ 60,000 or more. Such a label would put it at odds with the six-cylinder BMW X5, priced at $ 60,700, and with the Audi Q7 V-6 engine, which costs $ 59,950. This car will goes on sale soon.
